I had the pleasure of meeting Simon O'Neill, a native of New Zealand, during his time at The Juilliard School. And I heard him sing there, too - as the Chevalier de la Force in DIALOGUES OF THE CARMELITES, and as Sam Polk in Carlisle Floyd's SUSANNAH, opposite soprano Angela Fout.
Fast forward to 2006 when I saw Simon onstage at The Met for the first time, as the Priest of Neptune in Mozart's IDOMENEO. In 2008, he was a very impressive Met Siegmund. He repeated that role in 2013, and in 2014 I saw him twice as an impressive Drum Major in WOZZECK.
Simon sang Siegmund in a concert setting with The New York Philharmonic in 2018 and he was thrilling, though an inadequate Sieglinde was a thorn in the evening's side. But Simon, and basso John Relyea as Hunding, gave very exciting performances.
