In October of 1970, Plácido Domingo and Montserrat Caballé (above) shared the Metropolitan Opera stage in a performance of Verdi's UN BALLO IN MASCHERA. It was a stellar night, with Robert Merrill as Renato, Reri Grist as Oscar, and Irene Dalis as Ulrica.
In the scene at the gallows, Caballé's aria stopped the show, and then the two much-admired singers gave a thrilling performance of the love duet. During this duet, the soprano rested her head against Domingo's chest, and her wig caught on the braiding on his jacket. They continued to sing, and the tenor managed to save the situation just in time for the duet's conclusion.
