Esther Rethy sings Schubert's Ave Maria. The video is quite interesting: the old 78 rpm disc is played on an old gramophone in an open field.
Born in Hungary, Rethy (1912-2004) was for years a beloved star of the Vienna State Opera. Later in her career, following a huge success as Rosalinda in FLEDERMAUS conducted by Herbert von Karajan, Rethy moved to the Volksoper (in 1948) where she she continued to dazzle audiences in a number of operetta roles. Lanfranco Rasponi interviewed Rethy for his book THE LAST PRIMA DONNAS.
