Sunday March 20, 2011 - It's very rare these days that I find free time to check out a dance group other than the troupes that I frequently cover on my blog. Every single day I get invited to classes, rehearsals or performances by choreographers/companies that sound really interesting but there simply is no free space on my calendar to accommodate them. Today though, Kokyat and I had a free afternoon and were thus able to accept an invitation from John J Zullo to watch a reherasal for his upcoming performances (April 28th - May 1st) at the Theater for the New City.
It's always nice to walk into a studio and find some dancers there that we know; three members of John's troupe are people we've seen performing before: Jenna Liberati (above) danced in Pascal Rekoert's FLIGHTLESS BIRDS at Joyce SoHo last December...
...Mike Hodge (above) performed with isadoraNOW at their Symphony Space evenings in November 2010...
...and Or Sagi (above) also works with Lydia Johnson Dance.
Much of the rehearsal time today was devoted to developing a work-in-progress entitled How Brief Eternity which takes the theme of exploring the enduring hatreds which prosper in modern societies, most specifically the genocide of gay men in Iraq. Composer Mio Morales has created an original score for this piece.
Christina Chelette and Ashley Lindsey, above.
A second work, insignificant others is danced to a diverse score drawing upon music from Patsy Cline, Peteris Vasks and Tractor's Revenge. Here the dancers explore the brief relationships which come and go between longer and more meaningful ones.
