Kokyat's photographs from the January 8, 2011 rehearsal of a new duet created by David Parsons entitled PORTINARI. The work is set to Samuel Barber's pensive and spiritual Adagio for Strings. The dancers are Sarah Braverman and Miguel Quinones, above.
PORTINARI is inspired by the works of Brazilian painter Candido Portinari, perhaps best-known for his large masterworks Guerra e Paz at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City. The duet is intense and passionate, though not in a romantic sense: rather it seems to depict the artist's passion for his craft.
At the rehearsal, Sarah and Miguel danced so expressively that I couldn't keep myself from crying. These are two of New York City's most beautiful dancers and it was really wonderful to watch them working together.
More about this rehearsal here, and a gallery from another new Parsons work entitled WALK will be found here.
PORTINARI will be one of several works performed by Parsons Dance during their upcoming season at The Joyce, when a new piece made for the Company by Monica Bill Barnes will also premiere.
My thanks to Kokyat for these images.
