"Sundowning syndrome, also known as "Sundowners," is so named because its symptoms of confusion and agitation either manifest or become worse once the sun sets. It is most prevalent in those who are affected with Alzheimer's or dementia. For some, the symptoms may begin during late afternoon as the sun begins to set, while for others no symptoms present until evening when the sun has disappeared completely. Though this is a condition that remains a mystery to medical science, research is being conducted continually to discover the exact cause."
