Over the past few months Kokyat and I have had many opportunities to watch dancers working in the studio. On Tuesday evening at Steps on Broadway, Emily SoRelle Adams had the dance floor all to herself as she rehearsed Miro Magloire's solo IN A SIMPLE BLACK DRESS for upcoming performances by Miro's New Chamber Ballet. Information here.
Read about the rehearsal here, and about seeing this solo at an earlier performance here.
As early-evening light filtered in, Kokyat moved quietly around the space capturing the dancer in the many moods of this sustained solo, set to music of Pierre Boulez. Here are some of his images:
The solo is set for the dancer wearing one pointe shoe and one slipper, creating an unusual dynamic as in the twisty move above.
Our thanks to Emily and to choreographer Miro Magloire for inviting us to this behind-the-scenes peek at their upcoming performances.

She's very pretty. It must be a strange sensation to wear one toe shoe and one slipper.
