Sunday July 5, 2009 - Kokyat and I spent this beautiful day indoors watching two choreographers I really like, Takehiro Ueyama (above) and Lydia Johnson (below, with dancer John-Mark Owen) working with their respective dancers in preparation for upcoming Manhattan performances.
First we stopped at the Ailey Studios where TAKE Dance are readying themselves for their season at Dance Theatre Workshop which runs from July 30 - August 2. Take showed us parts of his earlier work, ORANGE and then they started rehearsing his upcoming premiere, SHABON (Bubbles).
Then we hopped on an E Train down to Canal Street and to the wonderfully atmospheric 5th floor walk-up studio of Battery Dance where Lydia's troupe were working to music of Gorecki and Glass. Lydia Johnson Dance will be at the Ailey Citicorp Theatre July 16 - 18 where, in addition to her Gorecki and Glass works, there will be a piece to songs sung by Dean Martin.
Photos: Kokyat. Photographs from both studios will appear here soon.
I always enjoyed Takehiro Ueyama's performances with the Taylor company, and I hadn't realized that he had started his own company.

I know that Battery studio and love it, it's got a great old feel and nice light in late afternoon.
