Recently at Dance Theatre Workshop I had my first view of the work of a choreographer new to me: Sydney Skybetter. Three of his works were on the opening programme of SummerDANZ and as each of the three unfolded I was increasingly drawn in to Sydney's way of moving dancers and most especially of his inventive structuring in the largest of the three pieces, HALCYON. Sydney has sent me some of Steven Schreiber's performance photos from the DTW evening. Above: HALCYON, with Kristen Arnold in developpe.
HALCYON was the largest of the works on the programme at DTW.
Kristen Arnold, who I got to know thru her performances with TAKE Dance, in the duet NEAR ABROAD with Bryan Campbell.
In the duet NEAR ABROAD, Kristen Arnold and Bryan Campbell. My friend Kokyat and I were truly moved by the poetic expression of these two dancers in this Skybetter pas de deux.
Sydney Skybetter also dances; here he is in FUGUE STATE, a lively Shostakovich work for a quartet of dancers.
In August, Kokyat and I plan to watch (and photograph) a Skybetter studio session.
