Excerpts from two ballets that haven't been seen for a while are on the bill for the Sunday night DANCERS' CHOICE festivities (above photo from last year's gala event) at New York City Ballet:
EPISIODES & SARCASMS is a 1994 Diamond Project ballet by Richard Tanner ballet set to Prokofiev. I cannot recall ever having seen this ballet but I am a great admirer of some of Mr. Tanner's other works: SONATAS AND INTERLUDES, ANCIENT AIRS AND DANCES and SOIREE (all of which I would love to see again).
THE WALTZ PROJECT is a Peter Martins creation from 1988. It is a collection of brief dances set to the music of various 20th century composers all featuring the waltz beat. I recall it as being quirky, sometimes romantic and quite enjoyable. Above: Julie Diana and Benjamin Pierce danced in San Francisco Ballet's 2003 revival of WALTZ PROJECT (photo Andrea Flores).
Jenifer Ringer will be the 'hostess with the mostess' for this much-anticipated NYC Ballet evening: Sunday June 14th at 7:30 PM.
How thoughtful of you to give us a bit of information about these, the two unknown quantities among the titles in the program listing for the gala evening. I only vaguely recall Waltz Project and nothing of the Episodes and Sarcasms rings a bell.
Also I hadn't realized that the San Francisco Ballet had performed Waltz Project.
