I feel like a complete idiot for missing Columbia Ballet Collaborative's performances at the Miller Theatre (April 3 & 4) but by the time I had news of it I was already booked for this weekend. Now I feel even worse, since New York City Ballet's Justin Peck (above, in Paul Kolnik's headshot) is making his debut as a choreographer at these performances and one of my top favorite ballerinas, Teresa Reichlen is dancing Justin's new work. Read about it at The Winger where you'll also find a really nice rehearsal photo by Gwyneth Muller.
When Lisette and I were at the ballet earlier this year, a very tall, slender fellow was sitting in front of us. "Who is he?" my soprano-friend whispered to me. "Russell Janzen!" I told her. Since I first began seeing Russell around at NYCB I had been thinking that he and Tess would look great dancing together. And now they are, in Justin's pas de deux.
Justin is using music by Joby Talbot whose score for Christopher Wheeldon's FOOLS PARADISE was so spectacular.
Russel and I danced together way back when at the Rock School. He's great! Sad I, too, have to miss these performances.

I went last night so I thought I would report in! It was an enjoyable evening with lots of variety and talent. I was particularly impressed with Justin Peck's piece entitled "A Teacup Plunge" (Isn't that a great title) It was short, left me wishing for more - a smart way to make a choreographic debut! His dancers Tess Reichlen and Russell Janzen were beautiful and I hope we see them dance together a lot more at NYCB. I also really liked Emery LeCrone's piece - the most contemporary movement style of the evening - with strong dancers Kimi Nikaidoh, Victoria North, and Ted Seymour. Many of the dancers in the program danced professionally before coming to Columbia and it was an impressive group. Altogether a fun evening!

Monica, thanks so much for posting your note about the performance. I was really sorry to miss it!
I wasn't aware that Emery was also creating something for them; I just saw her perform with New Chamber Ballet and she is such an attractive dancer.
Yes, I hope Tess and Russell team up at NYCB this Spring!
