Philip, Thanks so much for your memories of Makarova - I will have to look for that tape next time I stop by the library. It sounds like you & I were following opposite dance tracks in the 70's. I was an ABT devotee making occasional forays to NYCB. I adored Makarova and while I don't think I ever saw her Aurora, the images of her Odette, Giselle and La Sylphide were burned into my brain. Such lyricism, legato flow & expression. Especially with Nagy. And she had the most gorgeous, flexible feet! It also looks like you saw 3 of my old favorite ABT soloists in that long ago Beauty - Glushak, Morales & menendez. Those were great years to be a ballet fan in NY!

Hi Susan, great to hear from you! Yes, Nanette Glushak, Jolinda Menendez and Hilda Morales were dancers I very much enjoyed in those days at ABT.

I have a fun story about Hilda Morales. After she stopped dancing she opened a ballet school in a town just up the Hudson from NYC. When I was working at the insurance company as an adjuster I handled a claim for her. It was probably not the 'professional' thing to, do but when I mailed her the settlement check I included a brief note that I'd seen her dance several times with ABT. She replied with a gracious letter inviting me to her studio.

Hilda has a brief, adorable role in the film THE TURNING POINT.

Oh, and there's a clip of Makarova and Nagy in SWAN LAKE included in the MAKAROVA RETURNS video. Nagy is just impeccable...what a Prince!

This little documentary has me all worked up about Makarova!

Do you have the VHS tape of them in ABT's Swan Lake circa 1976? It's out of print but I picked it up for $7.95 from a Tower Video closeout bin many years ago and I treasure it. There's also a commercially available video & DVD of her with Dowell in the Royal's production. It's not bad but nowhere near as good as the ABT Blair version. That's still my favorite Swan Lake, with Makarova exactly as I remember her from the 70's and Nagy incomparable as Prince Siegfried. If memory serves Nanette Glushak leads the czardas and Menedez does the Spanish Dance and one of the swan solos.

Philip

I've seen the Royal version and just ordered it from Amazon. I've never seen the ABT.
