At the US Open, Gilles Muller from Luxembourg has marched up the draw from qualifier to quarter-finalist. Along the way he beat Germany's Tommy Haas and two seeded players: Nicolas Almagro (18) and Nikolay Davydenko (5).
At the 2005 US Open, Gilles scored probably his most celebrated victory to date when he ousted Andy Roddick in the first round. That year American Express had built an enormous ad campaign around the American player - the whole Tennis Center was one big Andy Roddick shrine with giant photos of him looming everywhere. The upset was the talk of tennis that season.
UPDATE: Well, Gilles did very well against Federer taking the Swiss star to two tie-breakers. But Fedi outlasted him. Gilles Muller has the distinction of having served the most aces (to date) of any player at this year's US Open: 128. Bravo Gilles!
