Dove @ PNB

 

In the above Paul Kolnik photo, Peter Boal - now the artistic director of Pacific Northwest Ballet - with Wendy Whelan in the New York City Ballet's production of Ulysses Dove's RED ANGELS. Last Summer when PNB brought their Ulysses Dove programme to Jacob's Pillow I couldn't help but wish they would make a quick detour to perform the works here. On March 18th, the Company will commence a series of Dove performances at their theater in Seattle.

The programme includes RED ANGELS, VESPERS and SERIOUS PLEASURES as well as a new work by Victor Quijada entitled SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF to music by Mitchell Akiyama.

Anyone who has seen RED ANGELS will understand the power and the appeal of Ulysses Dove's work. I was among the fortunate ballet-goers to also see a performance of his other work for New York City Ballet: TWILIGHT, which was so different in atmosphere - with its shadowy lyricism - from ANGELS with its angular passion.

 

Ulysses Dove died in 1996 of an AIDS-related illness. As with so many creative spirits who left us too soon, it is mind-boggling to contemplate what he might have created - and what he might still be creating - had he survived.

A quote from the choreographer: "In every embrace, every second of life [should be] lived so fully that there can be no regrets, no retreats, no looking back."

Philip - Thank you for the nice plug! We're looking forward to the DOVE program, which opens Thursday. Parrish Maynard has been here to stage "Serious Pleasures" and the company is very excited to be presenting this almost-lost work. Cheers, - Gary
