More of Kokyat's photos from our afternoon watching Lydia Johnson's dancers preparing for their upcoming performances at Ailey Citigroup Theater which begin this Thursday, July 16th. Above, from LAMENT: one dancer was absent from the rehearsal so this lift is missing its 'object'. But somehow this was my favorite picture of the day. Click on each image to enlarge.
LAMENT includes some striking 'floor' moments for the dancers.
Eric Vlach and Jeremy Smith in LAMENT, set to music of Henryk Gorecki.
LAMENT's male/male duet, Eric lifting Jeremy. This is one of the most beautiful passages in the work.
A repeated motif in LAMENT as the ensemble move from one corner of the stage to another (see top photo also). When Lydia told the dancers that she wanted to see their 'humanity' in this passage and in the lifts, I knew exactly what she meant. And so did her dancers. I realized watching her work that Lydia and I feel the same way about movement...and music. I guess that's why her dances seem so special to me.
Three of Lydia's dancers: Jeremy Smith, Lisa Iannacito and Jessica Sand. The studio light was so lovely at that time of day.
All photos: Kokyat. More to follow. Lydia's dress rehearsal is on Wednesday and her performances open at Ailey Citigroup on Thursday.
I came on these photos by chance. They are wonderful. I have worked in that studio (years ago!) and loved the feeling I got being there especially as the light changed in the afternoon and as evening fell.
