Event Horizon: ARIADNE UNHINGED
Last year when I attended a rehearsal and performance of Piazzolla's tango-opera MARIA DE BUENOS AIRES given by the Gotham Chamber Opera I noticed an interesting offering listed for their Spring 2008 production: ARIADNE UNHINGED. This theatre-piece in which musical settings of Monteverdi, Haydn and Schoenberg are combined will be presented at the Playhouse at the Abrons Center, 466 Grand Street, from May 7 - 11. The production is by choreographer Karole Armitage and with the participation of her Company, Armitage Gone!, and is designed by Vera Lutter with costumes by Peter Speliopoulos.
A couple of Stephanie Berger's photographs from the production have come my way in which the mezzo-soprano Emily Langford Johnson as Ariadne is seen with dancers Frances Chiaverini and Ryan Kelly. The mixture of musical styles and the meshing of dance and vocal performance sound pretty intriguing; and I'm curious too about the performing space. MARIA DE BUENOS AIRES was a superb theatrical experience and I'm counting on Gotham Chamber Opera to produce another winner. I'll be attending the opening on May 7th.
Tickets: Ticket Central or by phone (212) 279-4200.
